Vad är det okända sambandet mellan John Pohlman och Josef Stalin?

Precis som Håkan visste: Stalin jobbade som meteorolog (inte i Sverige men i Tiflis) - "the only job he held before becoming one of the rulers of Russia in 1917" (citerat från Simon Sebag Montefioris strålande "Stalin - The court of the read tsar").

Nils som inte kom på sambandet skrev: "Gjorde åtskilliga försök till intelligenta (som jag trodde) sökningar på nätet mm. Men lyckades inte. Slog mig då att det väl borde gå att hitta på ett sökverktyg som hittar samband? Eller finns det kanske sådana? Hitta icke-triviala ord som står nära respektive sökord?"

Nå, Steven Berlin Johnsson skrev bara häromdagen i New York Times om nya sökverktyg med början till den sortens kvalitéer i Tool for Thought (30 jan); essän fortsätter på hans blog: Tool for thought (med skärmdumpar) och DevonThink continued.

Devon Think och andra verktyg "learns associations between individual words, by tracking the frequency with which words appear near each other". Sådana associationer har tidigare varit grova och ofta gett mer dumma resultat än användbara. Men ska man tro Steven Johnsson har de nu blivit minst en magnitud bättre:

"These programs all work in slightly different ways, but they share two remarkable properties: the ability to interpret the meaning of text documents; and the ability to filter through thousands of documents in the time it takes to have a sip of coffee. Put those two elements together and you have a tool that will have as significant an impact on the way writers work as the original word processors did. (...)

Compare that to the traditional way of exploring your files, where the computer is like a dutiful, but dumb, butler: ''Find me that document about the chimpanzees!'' That's searching. The other feels different, so different that we don't quite have a verb for it: it's riffing, or brainstorming, or exploring"

Jag tror inte att DevonThink skulle kunna hitta sambandet mellan Pohlman och Stalin. Än. Men utvecklingen är ... häftig. En av de mer spännande idéerna hos är den här:

"...there needs to be an easy way to import blog archives into DevonThink, particularly because so many blog entries are in that 50-500 word sweet spot. There are some bloggers out there whose archives I would happily import into DevonThink to supplement my own library as well. It should be easy enough to create a movable type plugin that would interface nicely with DevonThink."

Min blog är "my outboard brain", min utombordshjärna, som en bloggare definierat det. Och tänk om man så enkelt kan koppla ihop sin utombordshjärna med de utombordshjärnor som kompletterar ens egen? Det skulle vara riktigt kul.
